I had just moved to Fort Collins, and my kid was like 6. There were a lot of Geospatial events in Colorado, but I didn’t have the infrastructure to take care of my kid. I missed having boozy conversations about Geostuff. I had thought about a podcast for a while, where we’d just drink and talk.
I put the bat signal up on Twitter, and Silas responded. I couldn’t have asked for a better partner in crime. We did a quick hang out, and we meshed.
Over time the podcast became about folks’ “origin stories” which started me on a path to being a mentor for folks. Just that if us or our guests could do it, so could you.
Once I moved to Boston timezones made it hard to do anything. We had a couple of attempts during lockdown to relaunch, but it just didn’t catch. The lightning was out of the bottle. Sometimes things have their point in time, and they end, and you gotta be okay with that.

In 2017/18 I was about a decade into being a GIS professional. I had created a GIS for Super Bowl 50, had just finished my 2nd or 3rd book on Python programming for geospatial, and had started consulting on all kinds of geospatial projects. I finally felt like I had some cache to speak about different technologies and concepts and trends, and the confidence to do so.
It was obvious that geo technology was transforming life as we knew it, powering online and real world interactions. I wanted to talk about it to other people who wanted to talk about this crazy thing and what it meant for our personal and professional lives. People who didn't need me to explain that “GIS is like Google Maps” (in fact I had switched to saying that “GIS is like Tinder or Uber” instead).
I saw Tee online a lot and loved their pro-open source/pro-geospatial accessibility posts. It was exciting and funny and annoying to the right people. So when Tee asked for interest in the pod, I immediately volunteered.
It was the perfect match of humor and experience and excitement, plus we knew enough interesting people to bring on. And we both love a good happy hour!
